*Doeskin is a fine, dense wool fabric that is soft and slightly fluffy to the touch, reminiscent of the softness of deer skin (doe skin in English). It is a combed wool fabric that is tightly woven, then fulled and brushed to achieve a smooth, velvety surface. Very supple, matte, and with an elegant drape, it was prized for officers' and generals' caps for its military haute couture appearance. Hats made from doeskin by private suppliers are considered to have a more luxurious look: elegant shape, smooth and velvety surface, more uniform color, and sharp creases.
