It was awarded to German and Axis servicemen who took part in Operation Barbarossa, particularly during the harsh winter of 1941-1942.
It was awarded in the following categories:
- 14 days of active combat service in the zone between November 15, 1941 and April 15, 1942 ;
- 60 days of non-combat service in the zone between November 15, 1941 and April 15, 1942;
- wounded in action ;
- killed in action (posthumously) ;
- serious injury caused by the cold (or by the climate in general).
Over three million medals were awarded.
