The NSDAP (National Socialist German Workers' Party) was founded in Munich on January 5, 1919 as the DAP (German Workers' Party). When Adolf Hitler joined the DAP in the autumn of 1919, he had to transform what had been a mere debating society into an active political party. Appointed the party's first president on July 29, 1921, Hitler had to restructure it along paramilitary lines, with a four-tier hierarchy. Please note: although the precise date of creation of this badge is not known, it is estimated at between January 1920 and September 1921, based on a sketch made by Hitler.

In 1920, Adolf Hitler, the NSDAP's propaganda chief, designed the party flag (red background, white circle, black swastika). In Mein Kampf, he details this episode, and in particular his choice of red and black, the colors of the German Empire, but also so as not to leave the monopoly of red to Communism. He also composes the first party posters, and a sketch of what will become the NSDAP membership badge.

Standard membership badge awarded to all members when they officially join the party. Stamped alloy badge, 25 mm in diameter. Made of multicolored enamel, the badge features a translucent red circular outer border with the raised silver inscription “NATIONAL-SOZIALSTISCHE-DAP”, surrounded by a white enamel field adorned with a slanted black swastika.
It wasn't until the end of 1934 that the RZM mark appeared on the back of this badge. Items manufactured for the NSDAP, and other Nazi formations, including membership badges, were subject to quality control by the RZM (National Equipment Intendant) and thus marked with the RZM logo.
