From January 1937 onwards, Hitler Youth and Jungvolk officers had to pass an annual physical fitness test covering a number of different sports. In May 1938, a special golden leader's sports badge (German: Goldenes Fuhrersportabzeichen der Hitler Jugend) was instituted to reward officers who achieved the best results in these tests.

The gilded copper badge features a swastika surrounded by a ring bearing the inscription: “Für Leistunger in der HJ” (For the deserving in the HJ) in runic script, placed in front of a large tiwaz rune, surrounded by a narrow laurel wreath. The reverse is numbered and features a pin to be worn on the left breast pocket. Over 11,000 have been issued.
