The Order of the German Eagle (German: Verdienstorden vom Deutschen Adler) is an award of the Third Reich, mainly conferred on foreign diplomats. The Order was instituted on May 1, 1937 by Adolf Hitler.
The Order of the German Eagle was a diplomatic distinction awarded to important foreigners, particularly diplomats considered to be Nazi sympathizers. Eventually, several Germans were awarded the Order, including Konstantin von Neurath, who received the Special Level of the Order of the German Eagle on April 20, 1939, and Joachim von Ribbentrop for his appointment to the Foreign Ministry.
