As early as 1936, the Minister of the Interior of the Reich of the time, Wilhelm Frick, had instituted a medal of honor of the firefighters of the Reich (Rgbl. December 22, 1936, page 1146), which was however soon to be replaced by a new decree of Hitler.

The Reich firefighters' medal was founded on December 22, 1936 by the Minister of the Interior of the Reich of the time, Wilhelm Frick, in recognition of the services rendered in the fight against fires and was replaced by the medal of honor of the firefighters at the end of 1938. From 1936, the Reich firefighters' medal was the only firefighters medal awarded in Germany, after the Reich firefighters medal of December 22, 1936, deprived the associations of the States and the Provinces of the Authority to award their own firefighters.

The structure of the two classes's decoration of honor has been preserved. The only difference was that the first class cross was now transformed into an order of ribbon, which was unusual.
