The West Wall Medal (German: Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen) is a military decoration of the Third Reich, created in 1939 to reward those involved in the defense of Germany's western frontier.
It was awarded to soldiers assigned to build the fortifications on Germany's western border, and to the troops who served there until May 1940, in particular the Siegfried Line (Westwall). In 1944, as Germany anticipated the arrival of Allied troops, a second series was awarded to those involved in the more recent fortifications on the western border.
In all, 622,064 medals were awarded.
