The Star of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross (German: Stern zum Großkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes) was the highest military decoration of the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire. It was considered the superior decoration to the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross (German: Großkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes).
This decoration was awarded to the most outstanding members of the military. In a century, it has been awarded to just two people: Generalfeldmarschall Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher in 1815 for his victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, and Generalfeldmarschall Paul von Hindenburg in 1918 for his victory at the Battle of Tannenberg. It is often referred to as the “Blücherstern” (Blücher's star) after Hindenburg was awarded it.
During the Third Reich, Hermann Göring introduced a new version of the award, with the intention of granting it to Adolf Hitler after the German victory in the Second World War. With the German defeat in 1945, the decoration was never awarded to anyone. American troops seized the only known prototype of this decoration, stored in a bunker. It is now in the collection of the West Point Military Academy Museum.
